about

2016 Album Glass Balloon was recorded on two hot August days in NE Portland, Oregon at Yuko's home attic studio. It is Helioscope's 6th release. Helioscope now functions as a satellite music project. Lydia flew from NYC and Katie flew from Flagstaff, Arizona to meet up with Yuko and record these 6 tracks. Katie and Lydia worked long distance on the tracks prior to the trip.

This is also the first album showcasing an experimental instrumental track by Lydia and Yuko. While they have been making music like this for some time privately and for yoga classes and Helioscope rehearsals, it was the first time to appear on a Helioscope album.

Love: A Fig Tree was one of the first songs the band worked on 4 years ago but hadn't been finished or recorded till now.

The other 2 songs were written within the last year. Katie, lyricist and project starter employed a different method of songwriting for them. "These weren't tired and true tracks, concepts and loves that I had been harboring for years like the other songs-they were newer, more fragile and putting words to them didn't come as easily. Some of the lyrics were made or changed the final day of recording and I'm proud to say this was the first album that Yuko contributed a lyric for. This album also contains more melodies written alternatively or sung alternatively between Lydia and Katie, being newer songs. Indie bands are known for sounding small and looking cute- but we want to sing about big concepts. We've written songs about lost parents and disease in the past and I hope we continue to focus on big issues. We can't help being super cute though."

about

helioscope Portland, Oregon

Deep dark folk etc band, Helioscope hails from the searingly plain industrial park landscapes of Bushwick. With experimental economic percussion by Yuko Pepe, sweetly strange songs & melodies by Katie King, and expansive music and keys by Lydia Velichkovski, Helioscope spins colorful yarns of weird love.

As of 2015, Helioscope operates as a Sattelite band, orbiting from PDX, BK and AZ.
